Math Team Modeling Success in 2026!

Over the Spring semester, Stevenson Modeling Teams took on a three modeling challenges, taking home several titles!

MathWorks Math Modeling Challenge (M3)

M3 modeling teams tackled the problem “The Rise of Online Gambling: What’s at Stake?“, in which they modeled disposable income as a function of multiple variables, modeled an individual’s gains or losses through online gambling, and synthesized their findings to communicate the impact of online gambling.

The team of Atrey Iyer (Jr), Likhith Nimmanapalli (Jr), and Hemanth Samayamantri (Jr) won Semi-Finalists honors and received a prize of $1,500!

The team of Jonathan He (Sr), Angela Ho (Sr), Tanav Ravella (Sr), and Richard Xu (Sr) was recognized with Honorable Mention distinction and won $1000.

The team of Alex Gou (Jr), Dannan Li (Jr), Wenhan Li (Jr), and Eric Zhang (Jr) placed in the Top 20% of all competing teams!

Modeling The Future Challenge (MTFC)

The Modeling The Future Challenge (MTFC) is an academic challenge hosted by The Actuarial Foundation with design and operations support from the Institute of Competition Sciences. Each year a technology topic area is selected and students are challenged to develop and present their own mathematical models describing how they envision the new technology or industry will change the future.

The team of Atrey Iyer (Jr), Likhith Nimmanapalli (Jr), and Hemanth Samayamantri (Jr), with the team name Disciples of L’hopital, won first prize out of hundreds of MTFC teams across the country, taking home $25,000 in scholarships! You can read their paper, “Back on Track: Modeling the Recovery of Chicago’s Underfunded Pension System“.

The following teams were honored as Semi-Finalists:
Amber Dong (Jr), Amritha Praveen( Jr), Jill Wang (Jr), and Chloe Xu (Jr)
Alex Gou (Jr), Dannan Li (Jr), Wenhan Li (Jr), and Eric Zhang (Jr)
Jonathan He (Sr), Angela Ho (Sr), Kritik Jain (Sr), Tanav Ravella (Sr), and Richard Xu (Sr)

Consortium for Mathematics and its Applications Challenge (COMAP)

“COMAP’s Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MCM) and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) are international contests for high school students and college undergraduates. The contests challenge teams of up to three students to analyze, model, solve, and present solution reports to an open-ended application problem. In these contests research, analytics, and applied intelligence are just as important as time management and problem selection. Are you and your team up to it?”

The teams of Angela Ho (Sr), Amritha Praveen (Jr), and Jill Wang (Jr) and of Jonathan He (Sr), Tanav Ravella (Sr), and Richard Xu (Sr) put forward strong papers but unfortunately did not take home any awards.

Great job to the SHS Modeling Teams with their collective performance this year!
