How great is a four day weekend!

I hope you are enjoying a time of rest and perhaps a time for some recreational math or competition math.

Our next math meeting is in March… it was March when school was last in session in a pre-pandemic world.  Isn’t it crazy that we have existed in this masked way for a whole year?  While there have been many real and significant difficulties during this time, I am grateful for what has continued to be a part of our lives.

We all as coaches are grateful for you and are so proud of you guys.

This week, we will participate in the last NSML event of the year!
Pressure is a privilege friends.  We have a chance to do something special here.  So please work through practice problems that your coaches send you, and prepare yourself to be the best you can be!  Compete against yourself to beat or tie your best score for an NSML event this year!  And if you have never officially come out to an NSML event, I want to invite you again to compete with us!  Sometimes we must dare to try new things…

Fill out the form to confirm your participation on Thursday, 3/4, at 6 PM.https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScYcyMNiZbrgxBNu10VKKAF3FHOutkRwYjiaTT3Gp_H8tz6ng/viewform?usp=sf_link

On Tuesday, we will go through some last preparations and practice problems for this NSML event, and run through some ICTM team competitions as well.We will also discuss our plans for taking the state math contest during our zoom call.

Be well and enjoy the day off tomorrow!

2021_0119 math team!

Mon, Jan 18, 10:15 PM

Happy MLK day!

I hope that your mind and body are well rested as we come back to school this week… for some of you, literally.

Though some may be coming into the building tomorrow, we will continue to meet remotely via zoom, and for now, we will also meet at the same time.  If you will have to zoom in late, no worries… dial in if you can, or just meet up with us when you get home again.  All this is new, and we’ll figure things out as we go.  But to be clear: there is no in person meeting – we will meet via zoom.

We ended 2020 by winning a national math competition together, now we focus on our region with NSML and then our state with ICTM.  Accordingly, tomorrow we will spend:1.  8% of our time on opening remarks2.  100% of our dedication to NSML 4 topicsD.  70% of our extra mental capacity in outlining the extra ICTM events
=)  It’s late. I’m tired.

See ya’ll tomorrow!

Math team!!!! 2021_0112

Mon, Jan 11, 3:47 PM

Welcome back everybody!
Tomorrow we are back into math team.  Although we have a new schedule that ends at 3:25 as opposed to 3:20, we will officially start at 3:40, though we hope to open the zoom call around 3:35 like before.  Teachers are in the building for the first time today, and to be honest, I’m not too sure how we want to do things… lots of things are still pretty fluid.
After a few announcements, we will indeed have a speaker from AOPS come in tomorrow for our call.  I don’t want to spoil the topic, but know that it is housed inside linear algebra… so again, please casually look up some terms and concepts regarding linear algebra and then zoom in to see what happens!  Should be fun and a nice way to ease into this new semester.
Same zoom link as always, with an official start time of 3:40.https://zoom.us/j/92119341972

see you tomorrow!pk

Math team? not today

Tues, Jan. 5, 1:00 PM

Just a reminder that there is no math team this week…We want the shock of returning to school to fade before we see your happy faces.
Next week we will be having someone from the Art of Problem Solving (AOPS) lead a talk for us.  Right now, the talk will assume a little bit of linear algebra knowledge, so if you get a chance, read up on some basic linear algebra concepts… =)  vectors, matrices, …  just familiarize yourself with terms if in fact we do go with a topic related to linear algebra…
=)  see you in a week!pk

FINAL MEETING OF THE SEMESTER: 12/15/2020 Math team

Mon, Dec 14, 1:11 PM

Hark! I bring to you a message of good cheer!

… really, I’m forwarding an email from Mr. Anderson

For when you wake again, Math Team will be here!

… really, it’s not full on math team, it’s math madness glory

So make haste! oh vile evening, and bring to us a new day!

… yeah, we really want to see you zoom in tomorrow.

And now, Mr. Anderson:

Let’s put this in writing: Precision over pace but integrity over all of it!

We have advanced to the final rounds against the toughest remaining teams in the tournament!  We will meet TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15th 1:35-3 PM.   Your last possible final on this day would be ending at 1:25, so you would have 10-minute break before joining our normal zoom meeting.

Here is the code: https://zoom.us/j/92119341972

You may be wondering why it is such a wide time range.  We are now in the top 4 and we will actually complete with the championship questions after our final 4 round questions. We will do one 30-minute competition, ensure all the work is submitted, then complete the second 30-minute competition and make sure all the work is submitted before you leave.

Tell your friends and make sure you reserve this time.  The depth of our team is our strength, so we need everybody to be there.  That is right: EVERYBODY.  How many bodies? Every BODY!

Final note:  With the level of honor to be in the top 4, we must continue to share our work for these problems.  Last time some students still did not identify their answers from their work clearly.  Please box the answer you submit.  If you did the problem in your mind, write “I did this in my mind. ANSWER: 5″  Let’s make this improvement.  It will make my work much easier and prevent any team from challenging our results.

I look forward to another opportunity to think about math!  If there is something I missed, please let me know.
