Math team!!!! 2021_0112

Mon, Jan 11, 3:47 PM

Welcome back everybody!
Tomorrow we are back into math team.  Although we have a new schedule that ends at 3:25 as opposed to 3:20, we will officially start at 3:40, though we hope to open the zoom call around 3:35 like before.  Teachers are in the building for the first time today, and to be honest, I’m not too sure how we want to do things… lots of things are still pretty fluid.
After a few announcements, we will indeed have a speaker from AOPS come in tomorrow for our call.  I don’t want to spoil the topic, but know that it is housed inside linear algebra… so again, please casually look up some terms and concepts regarding linear algebra and then zoom in to see what happens!  Should be fun and a nice way to ease into this new semester.
Same zoom link as always, with an official start time of 3:40.https://zoom.us/j/92119341972

see you tomorrow!pk

Math team? not today

Tues, Jan. 5, 1:00 PM

Just a reminder that there is no math team this week…We want the shock of returning to school to fade before we see your happy faces.
Next week we will be having someone from the Art of Problem Solving (AOPS) lead a talk for us.  Right now, the talk will assume a little bit of linear algebra knowledge, so if you get a chance, read up on some basic linear algebra concepts… =)  vectors, matrices, …  just familiarize yourself with terms if in fact we do go with a topic related to linear algebra…
=)  see you in a week!pk

FINAL MEETING OF THE SEMESTER: 12/15/2020 Math team

Mon, Dec 14, 1:11 PM

Hark! I bring to you a message of good cheer!

… really, I’m forwarding an email from Mr. Anderson

For when you wake again, Math Team will be here!

… really, it’s not full on math team, it’s math madness glory

So make haste! oh vile evening, and bring to us a new day!

… yeah, we really want to see you zoom in tomorrow.

And now, Mr. Anderson:

Let’s put this in writing: Precision over pace but integrity over all of it!

We have advanced to the final rounds against the toughest remaining teams in the tournament!  We will meet TUESDAY, DECEMBER 15th 1:35-3 PM.   Your last possible final on this day would be ending at 1:25, so you would have 10-minute break before joining our normal zoom meeting.

Here is the code: https://zoom.us/j/92119341972

You may be wondering why it is such a wide time range.  We are now in the top 4 and we will actually complete with the championship questions after our final 4 round questions. We will do one 30-minute competition, ensure all the work is submitted, then complete the second 30-minute competition and make sure all the work is submitted before you leave.

Tell your friends and make sure you reserve this time.  The depth of our team is our strength, so we need everybody to be there.  That is right: EVERYBODY.  How many bodies? Every BODY!

Final note:  With the level of honor to be in the top 4, we must continue to share our work for these problems.  Last time some students still did not identify their answers from their work clearly.  Please box the answer you submit.  If you did the problem in your mind, write “I did this in my mind. ANSWER: 5″  Let’s make this improvement.  It will make my work much easier and prevent any team from challenging our results.

I look forward to another opportunity to think about math!  If there is something I missed, please let me know.

ARTHUR BENJAMIN: 11/17/2020 Math team

Sun, Nov 15, 7:46 PM

Dear math team,

Woot!  Big week coming up.

Tuesday we will take a small break from our typical preparation and here from Havey Mudd professor and TED speaker, Arthur Benjamin.  His talk will begin around 3:40 and go for about half an hour, so be sure to zoom on in.  The majority of his time will be on mental math… should be fun!

After our time with the professor, we will spend about 15 minutes in our breakout rooms to prepare for NSML #3.  Remember, we are literally one four point question away from first place!  Every single question counts, and we want to put ourselves in the best position to perform well.

Then, we continue in the madness!  After the first official round, Stevenson is….. ranked first!

But remember, each week is single elimination against the school that we compete in.  This week we compete against Diamond Bar High School of Diamond Bar, California. We will likely begin the madness around 4:35, so please try your best to stay with for a longer Tuesday event.  If you need to register, please be sure to contact Mr. Anderson or Ms. Renken.

I leave ya’ll with a couple tidbits.

1.  Each week we seem to add a few more people to our email distribution list.  It’s encouraging that more and more people are reaching out to be a part of math team.  Big hello and welcome to newcomers this week!

2.  Do. More. Problems!  Each week I also seem to get an email asking, what can I do to get better?  It really is simple.  Do more problems.  Your NSML coach probably has given you a bunch of problems, and every AMC and AIME contest for the past few decades can easily be found online with worked out solutions.  So after completing your NSML problem sets, why not just work systematically through AMC contests?  I suggest starting with the year you were born, and work every problem, read up on solutions, and keep going until you get to 2020.  I suggest dedicating a notebook to this work, or keeping well organized notability documents.  Personally I prefer doing problems on paper, but I’m quickly appreciating the colors, highlighters, and shape tools as I do geometry problems digitally.  Find what works for you, and JUST DO PROBLEMS!

I’ll email again Tuesday morning to remind you of the meeting… until then, enjoy doing some recreational math on your own!

Fri, Oct 30, 10:55 PM

To our beloved math team,

Opening congratulations.

It looks like the first qualifying round of the national Math Madness has concluded, and we are up on the leaderboard!

Taking the top 5 scoring students at a time, we are 100% accurate and in 6th place!

And when taking the top 10 scoring students at a time, we are 96% accurate and in 3rd place!

Going 20 students deep, we are in fourth place.

I love that so many of us are participating.  Thank you to Mr. Anderson for organizing along with the other math team coaches.  Poke around on their website and you may even find your name. =)

It tells us your intentions to:

1. Participate in NSML #2 on Wednesday around 6 PM

2. Participate in the second math madness round on Wednesday at 5:20 PM

For NSML, your coach will confirm via email the specific time slot and zoom link you will be testing at, but assume it to be similar to last time.

End-game scenarios

Hey, just enjoy the long weekend!  …well, it’s just one hour longer than normal, but I will gladly take it.  It should be nice out Saturday, go for a walk, enjoy the fall colors, show kindness to another.
